Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese word which represents the universal life energy,
the energy that is found all around. Since the mid-1970’s Reiki has spread dramatically
worldwide and the healing properties of this life energy have become more popular and
appreciated in the Western world.
It is an alternative healing practice that incorporates elements of many other healing
practices such as spiritual healing, charka balancing, meditation, and aromatherapy. The
practice of Reiki involves the practitioner transferring energy to the patient in order to
enhance the body’s natural ability to heal through the balancing of this energy. In the
process of this transfer of energy, based on the premise of a human energy field, the Reiki
practitioner seeks to restore balance and order to the body’s vital energy.
Reiki sessions can have several basic effects: deep relaxation, the release of blocked
energy, detoxification, and increased vitality.
During a session, the practitioner will place his or her hands over the patient and direct
energy to the patient. The energy flow is directed by the patient’s body, with the energy
having a natural tendency to move toward the areas within the body that need this energy.
This also allows for the patient to take a more active role in the healing process, drawing in
energy as needed.
